## In short

I printed and hand-painted furnace lamps inspired by the game Rust, with lights inside to give the openings a warm glow. I made small shelf pieces with electric candle lights and a larger USB-powered version with a separate internal light support.

## Overview

I printed the shells, painted them by hand, and added lights inside to make these furnace lamps inspired by the game Rust.

The gray stone bases, tan chimneys, and darkened openings recreate the look of the in-game furnace.

I built a batch of small lamps with electric candle lights and a larger version powered by USB.

## Small candle-lit lamps

The smaller pieces use an electric candle-style light inside the printed shell.

The gallery includes the white shells before painting and a finished miniature; the cover shows a batch of six with their lights on.

Painting separates the gray lower stones from the tan upper surface.

Dark marks around the opening and chimney give the form a used appearance, while the interior light remains visible through the front.

## Larger USB-powered version

The larger assembly has three printed parts:

- Main shell
- Bottom closure
- Interior light support

### Power and lighting

The electronics consist of:

- A USB cable.
- A rocker switch, which toggles power on and off.
- A boost converter, which raises the input voltage.
- A light strip.

The switch controls input power to the converter, which supplies the strip inside the light support.

For a similar build, match the converter’s output voltage to the light strip and check the power supply’s current rating (how much electrical current it can supply).

## Assembly sequence

The larger lamp comes together in four steps:

1. Print the shell, bottom, and light support.
2. Paint the shell and glue the light strip into its support.
3. Wire the switch, converter, and strip.
4. Fix the support inside the furnace and attach the bottom.

The separate support makes the lighting easier to assemble before closing the shell. The large furnace is pictured beside a gallon jug for scale.

## Finish and photographs

The printed shell defines the stones and chimney. Paint separates the surfaces and adds soot marks, while the light gives the opening a warm glow.

These are fan props based on Rust’s furnace. My work is the printing, painting, assembly, and lighting. See my [other Rust props](<https://devanmetz.com/portfolio/painted-rust-props/>) for the satchel, chest, and smaller replicas.

## FAQ

### Do the miniature lamps use real candles?

The small lamps use electric candle-style lights inside printed shells.

### How is the larger furnace powered?

The larger version uses a USB cable, rocker switch, boost converter, and light strip. The switch controls power to the converter, which supplies the strip.

### Which parts make up the larger printed assembly?

The larger lamp has a main shell, bottom closure, and interior light support. The shell is painted and the light strip is glued into its support before final assembly.
